The Five: a Q&A spotlight on a member
Mark Brinkerhoff, brand communications consultant and founder of Think Brink Communications
- What made you decide to get into PR?
I was a communications major in college (print journalism emphasis) and always had a knack for writing, which, incidentally, was on the proverbial wall when I graduated in terms of career opportunities in journalism. I had taken courses in public relations, however, and appreciated the more business-oriented aspects of communications, which is why I segued to PR post-graduation.
2. What is the first PR job or client account you ever worked on?
I began my career in PR at a boutique agency in Colleyville, Texas, called Hill & Company. My first and, to this day, one of my favorite PR clients was Arlington-based Doskocil Manufacturing, specifically its Petmate brand. Representing a brand in a passion category like pets was definitely an education, as was working alongside dog lovers and cat lovers at events and in the media. (Scoring a lifestyle feature with Kirsten Dunst holding a portable Pet Porter didn’t hurt either.)
